Final Project
Poster
Each team will create a research poster that communicates their research purpose, methods, findings, and implications in a visually engaging and accessible format designed for a non-expert audience, such as policymakers or community stakeholders. The poster must be submitted as a PDF file and include the following components:
- A clear title and the names of all team members
- An introduction outlining the research question, objectives, hypothesis, and significance of the research topic
- A data and methods section providing a detailed description of the dataset, including the source, unit of analysis, and key variables, with at least one descriptive statistics table or figure
- A results section presenting the findings from the hypothesis test with at least one supporting figure and clear indication of statistical significance
- A discussion section addressing the implications of the findings, study limitations, and potential directions for future research
- A references section with a complete list of all cited studies using a consistent citation style
All tables and figures must be created for the poster; screenshots from software output are not permitted. The poster design should balance text and visuals effectively, using data visualization principles covered in class to tell a compelling story with the data. An AI use statement is required.
Evaluation Criteria:
- Research Quality and Content (50%): The poster clearly establishes the research purpose with a well-framed research question, objectives, and hypothesis that effectively highlight the topic's significance. The methods are clearly described and well documented, with thorough descriptions of the dataset and key variables. The findings are presented accurately and clearly, with proper identification and interpretation of statistical significance. The datasets, units of analysis (important), and scope or timeframe of the analysis are explicitly identified. The content effectively answers the research question with accurate, insightful interpretation connected to the research objectives.
- Visual Design and Communication (20%): The poster demonstrates effective visual communication through well-designed, clearly labeled tables, figures, and other visuals that enhance understanding of the content and follow data visualization principles covered in class. Screenshots of tables are not permitted. The poster balances text and visuals appropriately with a logical, easy-to-follow layout and clear headings that guide the reader through the research story. References are accurate, consistent, and complete, following a consistent citation style.
Presentation
Each team will deliver a 6–9 minute presentation of their research poster, clearly communicating the research purpose, data analysis, and findings to the audience. Teams may present directly from their poster or create a separate slide deck. Visual aids such as charts, tables, or figures are strongly recommended. The presentation should focus on clarity and accessibility, tailoring language and explanations for a non-expert audience.
Teams are encouraged to rehearse together to ensure effective time management, smooth transitions, and cohesive delivery. The suggested presentation structure includes a brief introduction covering the policy issue, research purpose, and significance; a methods section describing the dataset, variables, unit of analysis, and analytical approaches; a findings section highlighting key results with figures and discussing statistical significance; and a discussion or conclusion summarizing implications, limitations, and potential future research directions.
All team members should be prepared to respond to questions during the Q&A session with clarity, confidence, and strong understanding of the research. You must submit your poster PDF before the presentation. Reading speaking notes or scripts verbatim will result in a very low grade. An AI use statement is required.
Evaluation Criteria:
- Presentation Delivery and Knowledge (30%): The team delivers the presentation confidently and cohesively, with all members contributing and demonstrating clear understanding of the research and data analysis. Responsiveness during the Q&A session reflects thorough preparation with clear answers that demonstrate deep understanding. The presentation includes strong discussion of key takeaways, implications, and practical significance while effectively engaging the audience through clear language, well-designed visuals, and logical flow tailored for a non-expert audience. The work demonstrates professionalism with logical structure, clear headings, coherent flow, and writing that is clear, precise, and accessible. The team adheres to the time limit and uses respectful, inclusive, and professional language throughout, with overall work that is polished and reflects careful preparation and attention to detail.
